Skin Cancer Types
Basal cell carcinoma
In older individuals
In sun-exposed areas
It does not spread
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of cancer. BCC is not deadly, but it may require extensive treatment if not addressed in time by a doctor. BCC is not recorded in the Norwegian cancer registry, but based on its occurrence in Sweden, we can estimate 20,000-25,000 new cases annually in Norway.

Squamous cell carcinoma
In older individuals
In sun-exposed areas
It can spread
Squamous cell carcinoma can, in rare cases, spread if left untreated. In 2021, 3097 new cases were registered (1669 men and 1428 women). 58 individuals died from the disease.

Melanoma
In younger individuals
Everywhere, but morefrequently in sun-exposed areas
It spreads early
Melanoma, however, is extremely dangerous and spreads rapidly after it has reached a certain thickness. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and the second most common type of cancer in the age group 25-50 in Norway. In 2021, there were 2443 new cases of the disease registered (1279 men and 1164 women), and 295 died from the disease. Individuals with fair skin, red hair, many small moles, or large irregular moles have an increased chance of Melanoma. It is important to detect it early and remove it quickly. If removed early enough, it will not spread, and one can make a full recovery.
